Popping up spring-like in September, the leafless Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale) blooms in pink, white, purple and variations similar to crocus. However, the plant has its own genus with over forty species and hybrids. Native to Europe and Asia, the Colchicum plants grow in damp woodland clearings and meadows.  Plants are hardy in zones 4 – 9 and will naturalize over time in the garden.

Ward’s offers dormant Colchicum bulbs from August into September when they can be planted and their flowers can be enjoyed immediately. Plant in rich and well-drained garden loam perhaps at the dripline of shrubs or near summer perennials that get cut back in fall.  The tulip-like leaves will appear in May and grow fine in part shade. So, choose a spot that will have sun in April like where you would plant typical spring-blooming bulbs of daffodils, tulips, hyacinth and crocus.

The leaves photosynthesize and feed the bulb in spring. Wait to trim back until they turn yellow and go dormant in the summer.

As thoughts turn to harvest and autumn gardens, you’ll be surprised by the sudden blooms in September. And, you’ll be reminded to purchase more spring-flowering bulbs to plant during October!

Important note: Colchicum is NOT the source of saffron. The bulbs, stems & flowers are all toxic.

Our Summer Garden Advice

By mid-summer, perennial gardens can start to look overgrown, annual flowers begin to fade, and bugs may be munching on your vegetables.
